Practicum objective
A short opening line that explains your program, the placement you need, and your strongest area of interest.
Example: Master's-level counseling student seeking a behavioral health practicum focused on adolescents, families, and outpatient care.
Relevant coursework
List classes that match behavioral health settings and the population you hope to serve. This helps a site understand what you are prepared to learn.
Example: Counseling theories, ethics, human development, trauma-informed care, group counseling, diagnosis, substance use counseling.
Helping experience
Include paid, volunteer, internship, peer support, case management, crisis line, school, community, or healthcare experience.
Example: Provided peer support, completed intake calls, supported case managers, volunteered with youth programs, or helped clients navigate resources.
Behavioral health skills
Use practical phrases a site recognizes. Do not claim advanced clinical skills you have not been trained to perform.
Example: Active listening, documentation, confidentiality, motivational interviewing exposure, crisis de-escalation exposure, group facilitation, case coordination.
Documentation readiness
Behavioral health sites care about whether students can learn careful, timely notes and protect client privacy.
Example: Exposure to case notes, intake summaries, treatment-plan language, confidentiality practices, HIPAA training, and organized follow-through.
Group and facilitation experience
Include classroom, peer, support group, psychoeducation, youth program, or community facilitation experience when relevant.
Example: Co-facilitated peer discussions, supported classroom groups, led resource workshops, or assisted with psychoeducational activities.
Trauma-informed language
Use steady, respectful language. Show awareness of safety, choice, collaboration, culture, and strengths without overstating clinical expertise.
Example: Committed to strengths-based, culturally responsive, trauma-informed care under appropriate supervision.
Supervision fit
Name the supervision you need and show that you understand learning under supervision is part of the placement.
Example: Seeking weekly supervision aligned with LPC/LMHC practicum requirements; open to feedback, observation, and documentation review.
Population and setting fit
Tailor one version of your resume for each lead by matching the site's population, setting, and services.
Example: Interested in outpatient community mental health with adolescents and families; comfortable learning in multidisciplinary team settings.
Compliance and readiness
Mention trainings and requirements that reduce friction for a site.
Example: HIPAA training, mandated reporter training, background check eligibility, immunization records, CPR/first aid if relevant.
